Like its cousin, the California Poppy, this variety thrives in marginal soils, and marginal conditions. Its stunning flowers bloom earlier in the year - and their deep purple color is a lovely complement to the whites, reds, and yellows that are more common in the early season.

Take care when transplanting (the roots are more sensitive than most of our drought-tolerant plants), and make sure the soil stays moist (but not saturated - it’s a delicate balance) for the first few weeks after planting out.
